[ guardadores do campo ] was set up by atelier urban nomads in the beginning of 2014 for Pegada Cultural, a cultural and educational programme
run by EEA grants and DGARTES for exchange projects between Portugal and, in this case, Norway.

Espigueiros and Stabburs are ancient and vernacular structures that exist in Minho, Portugal, and in the region of Ål, Norway, as well as in many other parts of the world ( with a wide range of forms and made with local materials ). Today, many Espigueiros and Stabburs are run down or derelict. The purpose for which they were created is almost obsolete and they are often left abandoned, except when  converted into different kinds of spaces. Though they can still be found everywhere in those regions, local people are generally oblivious of their existence. They grew around them, but know little about their history or function. Very few people still know how to build them or use them for their initial purpose. Espigueiros and Stabburs are neglected national architectural heritage. Their preservation is important as landmarks of those regions, as well as catalysts for new typologies that might better serve the current needs of the local people.

The name [ guardadores do campo ] originates from the way in which Espigueiros normally inhabit the landscape, over the stepped hills found in Minho, as if they were standing creatures guarding the fields.

The photographs were taken by luísa alpalhão in February and March 2014. It was raining in Minho and snowing in Leveld. This selection intends to start exploring the similarities and differences of these two vernacular architectural typologies. Stabburs and Espueiros were photographed at similar angles and placed side-by-side, in order to better compare their forms, materials, ornamentation, context and function. The sentences written are statements the children wrote on the postcards they posted back.

Audio/visual postcards were collated overlapping the two structures with drawings that children from the school in Melgaço produced representing their readings on Espigueiros and imagined Norwegian landscapes. The overlap of the images starts playing with different ways in which these structures can lead to new shared spaces where people can gather and learn from each other. The merge between the two intends to allow us (who take part in the project) to learn about the two distinct cultures, exploring them with children from both regions, learning about different ways in which everyday life is lived.

The project is a work-in-progress, intending to eventually lead to the construction of new spaces in Minho and Leveld inspired by the form and functions of Espigueiros and Stabburs in relation to the social and physical transformations of those two regions. Those spaces should be the result of a long journey, a collective process of discovery explored using different techniques, from film to drawing and building, finding out about the local people’s current needs, everyday habits and communal activities, inviting them to be part of a transformation process that will not only restore the cultural and heritage value of these beautiful and charismatic structures, but that will also give those involved the power to transform their built and social environment, contributing to change.

The project is a collaboration with Leveld Kunstnartun, Leveld, Ål, Norway and Câmara Municipal de Monção, Câmara Municipal de Melgaço and Agrupamento de Escolas de Melgaço, Minho, Portugal.

[ guardadores do campo ] foi uma iniciativa do atelier urban nomads para a candidatura ao programa cultural e educativo Pegada Cultural, apoiado pela EEA e DGARTES com o intuito de facilitar projectos de intercâmbio entre Portugal e, neste casa, a Noruega.

Espigueiros e Stabburs são estruturas antigas, vernaculares que existem no Minho, Portugal, e na região de Ål, Noruega, assim como noutras partes do mundo (com várias formas diferentes e feitos de materiais locais). Hoje em dia muitos Espigueiros e Stabburs encontram-se em estado de abandono ou degradação. O propósito para o qual foram construídos é quase obsoleto e, excepto quando convertidos noutro tipo de espaços para arrumações, estão por isso muitos deles abandonados. Embora ainda se possam encontrar espigueiros e Stabburs nas respectivas regiões, grande parte da população local ignora a sua existência. A familiaridade das estruturas não se traduz numa passagem de conhecimento sobre a forma como estas foram construídas, sobre a sua história ou funções. Poucas pessoas sabem ainda como construí-las ou como usá-las para o próprio inicial. A sua conservação é importante tanto pelo seu valor como marcos emblemáticos do património, como pelo potencial que têm como catalisadoras de novas tipologias que possam vir a dar resposta às necessidades correntes da população das respectivas localidades.

O nome [ guardadores do campo ] deve-se à forma como os espigueiros normalmente ocupam a paisagem Minhota, em degraus, como se fossem guardiões dos campos.

As fotografias foram tiradas por luísa alpalhão em Fevereiro e Março de 2014. Chovia no Minho e nevava em Leveld. Esta selecção de imagens tem como intenção dar início a uma pesquisa sobre as semelhanças e diferenças entre as duas estruturas vernaculares. Stabburs e espigueiros foram fotografados em ângulos parecidos e compostos, lado-a-lado, de forma a poder comparar as formas, materiais, ornamentos, contexto e funções. As frases das images foram escritas pelas crianças do Agrupamento de Escola de Melgaço que nos enviaram postais com desenhos de espigueiros e paisagens Norueguesas.

Os postais foram transformados em postais audio-visuais com sobreposições das duas estruturas e os desenhos feitos pelas crianças. A sobreposição das imagens começa a explorar as possibilidades de um cruzamento programático e formal das duas estruturas vindo a dar origem a novos espaços sociais, de encontro e de aprendizagem. Este cruzamento permite-nos começar a perceber melhor as duas culturas, explorando-as com as crianças, aprendendo sobre diferentes formas de estar e viver.

O projecto continua em desenvolvimento e tem como objectivo vir a dar origem à construção de novos espaços no Minho e em Leveld inspirados nas transformações físicas e sociais das duas regiões. Estes novos espaços deverão surgir de um processo contínuo de descoberta, um processo colectivo explorando diferentes técnicas, do filme ao desenho, do desenho à construção, descobrindo quais as necessidades actuais, hábitos locais, e actividades comunitárias dos habitantes das duas regiões. Estes serão convidados a participar no processo transformador que irá re-valorizar um património cultural quase esquecido conferindo maior autonomia aos residentes locais para a transformação do meio que os rodeia.
